Dental implants are the best option for replacing missing tooth/teeth. It is placed in a way that provides a stable base for the tooth restorations (dental crown and bridges). Dental implant appears like a natural tooth. It consists of different parts. In this article, we will discuss about the different parts of a dental implant.
Parts of dental implants
A typical dental implant consists of three parts:
1) The implant body/fixture
This part of the implant is placed in the jawbone, which acts like a tooth root. After this, some period will be required for continuing the procedure as this part of the dental implant should be fused with the jawbone. This part is made of metal titanium and may or may not be coated with Hydroxyapatite.
2) The implant abutment
This part of dental implant sits above the gum line. The implant abutment provides a stable base for tooth restoration. The protective screw in between the implant body is removed and a small metal cap/cylinder (abutment) is placed. The only purpose of this part to be placed is to connect the tooth restoration (dental crown) and the implant body (tooth roots).
3) Tooth restoration/crown
This part of dental implant is visible in the mouth. The top most part of the dental implant. This restoration (Crown) is cemented on the implant abutment. A part that is made to feel and look like natural tooth.
