Brief About Facility Management

Since past decade, facilities management has developed rapidly and continues to grow in all major business sectors in many countries. Governments, business communities, researchers and educationalists of today’s business world have accepted facilities management (Facility management) as an important requirement for functioning of business.

In US, it is represented using both terms “facilities management” and “facility management”, while in UK, Australia, Canada and all English speaking business countries it is represented as “facilities management”. In some Australian Organizations it is replaced with the term “Commercial Services”.

Facilty management is a profession that involves collaboration of people and services, place, process and technology to ensure functionality of the built environment.

Definition:
Facilities Management is profession that integrates people and services for maintaining and taking care of commercial or institutional buildings such as offices, schools, hospitals etc., to enhance the overall efficiency and effectiveness of organizations.

International Facility Management Association (IFMA), has defined it as “a profession that encompasses multiple disciplines to ensure functionality of the built environment by integrating people, place, processes and technology.”

What is Facility Management?
Facilities management can be described as something that will:

  • Provide wide range of services and is responsible for those services
  • Enable changes in the use of space in the future
  • Effective utilization of resources and maintains assets, i.e. make them highly cost effective
  • Create competitive advantage for the organization’s core business
  • Enhance the productivity, profits to create identity of organization in market place.

Thus, facilities Management in short is optimization of all resources and creation of optimal environment for the organization’s primary functions, which helps in delivering customer satisfaction and addition of best value through support which leads to enhancement of the core business.
