What are Narcotics?

A narcotic is a drug which causes deep sleep. This is also a psychoactive drug. They cause disturbance in the central nervous system. These are addictive drugs that reduce pain as a short term effect but finally end with a many long term effects. In some cases they even cause euphoria. The tolerance is being built by these type of drugs within two or three days.

In general, the narcotics are commonly classified into three types depending upon their origin. They are: natural derivatives of opium partially derived synthetic drugs from morphine, total synthetic drugs that resemble morphine in the chemical structure.

They are abused in many ways like oral consumption; inter muscular, intravenous patches which are applied directly to the skin and even inhaling the drugs.

In humans, the central nervous system contains five receptor proteins which are present in the brain, spinal cord, and even the digestive tract. When opium is consumed then the receptors of the body will receive them and reduce pain as the short term effect. With the consumption of the Narcotics it gives immense pleasure of happiness and well being which are also the side effects of Narcotics.

If the interaction of the narcotics is done with other medications or the drugs then it causes damage to the central nervous system.

The long term effects of the Narcotics will be

  • Drowsiness
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Mental confusion
  • Slurred speech
