Impact of Illicit drugs on Health

Illicit drugs are harmful substances and they may result into loss of life of an addict. Their impacts are widespread and capable to cause physical and emotional damage to users. It also makes negative impact on their families, coworkers, and many others. Drug addiction can lead to contraction of illnesses, and prolonged hospital stays.

According to NDAT (National Drug Threat Assessment) report, 0.1 million teens reported for drug addiction case in 2008. Marijuana, prescription pain relievers, and cocaine were some common drugs in these cases. More 0.3 percent Marijuana adductor was found in 2008 as compared to 2007. In 2007 and 2008, 1.7 million were reported for prescription pain reliever abuse.

Those who became dependent of drugs may seek for treatment. The Treatment Episode Data Set (TEDS) helps to provide information of the demographics and substance abuse patterns of treatment admissions to state-licensed treatment facilities. In 2007, 1.8 drug cases were reported in these state-licensed treatment facilities. Among all cases 31% reported or Heroin addiction, 27% reported for Marijuana consumption, 22% reported for cocaine addiction and 13% reported for stimulants.

Overdose of drugs is the major causes for these cases. According to Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN), 113 million hospital visits ED for drug misuse or drug abuse cases. Among all visit 31% were for illicit drugs, 28 percent involved for CPD and 13 percent were for illicit drugs in combination with alcohol. It also states that an average of 12.1 deaths per 100,000 persons related to drug use.

Hence drug abuse has a very deep impact on the teens and adults life. Many states have amended drug-endangered children laws to protect children from the consequences of drug abuse. Many other laws were also planned by government to stop drugs abuse.
